Special Features: Strong growing, tall grass for wetlands. This ecotype has proved invasive in Eastern North America. There exists a native Eastern North American ecotype of the Common Reed for this region that is less aggressive. Can also be used to prevent waterside erosion and has been found effective in remediation efforts to remove chemical contaminants from polluted water.
Historical: Young shoots are edible and roots can be boiled. Anecdotal medicinal use for treatment of bronchitis. The reeds are used traditionally in Europe for thatched roofs.
