Plant Description

Life Cycle: Perennial
Family: Asteraceae
Origin: Cultivar; the wild species grows in China and Japan.
Special Features: An exquisite contrast between the large, decorative, dark purple foliage and husky orange-yellow rayflowers on dark sturdy stems. Bold groupings of 6 and more are eye-catching. Easy from seed. Full sun in cool summer climates to semi-shade elsewhere.
Historical: Introduced by JELITTO PERENNIAL SEEDS in 2008. Christian Kress, now of Sarastro Nursery in Austria, selected a seedling with dark, sturdy stems and rich, dark colored foliage (nearly black-purple in spring) with a habit that was a bit shorter and more compact. This handsome seedling became the basis for Jelitto's breeding.
